If you are an NRI living in the GCC now and intending to settle back in India later, this message is for you.
You work hard, provide for your family, and save for the future. We are quick to protect our vehicles, homes, and sometimes even our smartphones. But when it comes to your own health, do you have the same level of protection?
Many NRIs hesitate to take personal health insurance back in India while they are working in the GCC because they think:
Though these may seem like valid reasons, it’s important to understand this truth: any insurance policy is only accepted if you are healthy at the time of applying. Once a severe medical condition is diagnosed, you may no longer be eligible for a new policy – or may only get one with exclusions.
I have seen this happen to many NRIs. When they come back to India, they decide to take health insurance. But by then, a pre-existing medical condition stands in the way. In several cases, they are either denied coverage or offered policies with exclusions – some exclusions for the very condition they need protection for. And except for a few, most of the pre-existing illnesses come with a waiting period of 2 to 4 years, which means the coverage doesn’t begin immediately.
Health insurance is not a luxury for tomorrow – it’s a lifeline secured when you are well. Don’t wait for a medical situation to remind you what could’ve been protected earlier.
The Overlooked Truth About Not Having Medical Insurance as an NRI:
🚨 An unexpected medical emergency can drain years of hard-earned savings in no time. Without insurance, one single hospital bill can put away years of your hard-earned money. Medical expenses in India and the GCC are increasing at an alarming rate.
🚨Your employer-sponsored health insurance stops as soon as you stop working – so you change jobs, retire, or – hopefully not – lose your job. Whatever the reason is, you lose medical coverage immediately.
🚨Your present health plans in GCC will not support you when try to switch or secure a new policy in India. International policies don’t carry forward benefits like continuity or waiting period credits under present Indian regulations.
Your Health, Your responsibility.
So when should you ideally buy health insurance?
When you don’t need it. Because when you do, it may be too late to obtain coverage.
Having a proper medical insurance policy in India makes sure that You and your family are safeguarded if you decide to settle back in India at any point in the future.
Final Thought:
👉 Note: This insight is only relevant if India is where you see your destination. If the UAE or GCC is your forever home, your insurance priorities will have to follow a different path.
If you haven’t secured your Indian health insurance policy yet, it’s time to safeguard what’s most precious – your health and your loved ones.
